Typewritten copies of letters sent by Haines to his sister and diary-like letters, 1848-1849, of his travels by waterway across the country with the Army Corps of Engineers describing camp life, contact with Indians in Minnesota including meeting the Winnebago Indians on their relocation trip up the Mississippi, his impressions of the Stockbridge Indians in Green Bay, and accounts of the places he traveled including Blue Earth River, Minn.; St. Croix, Minn.; Prairie du Chien, Wis.; Dubuque, Iowa; St. Louis, Mo.; Louisville, Ky.; Cincinnati, Ohio; and Green Bay, Wis.
